The WD15 was complete junk and we are actively replacing those. I think we've had 2 out of about 30 that have failed. Another plus for the new WD19 is that they now all include their own service tag so that warranty returns and service is much easier for them. The WD19 weakness seems to be the cable, but it is better than the 10" cable that was on the WD16. Precision 5000 series and XPS users get the Thunderbolt version, and we bought a few 7000 series Precisions so those need the TD19DC with the dual thunderbolt connections to provide the full 180W of power required for those machines. If the user has a Latitude series, then they get the WD19. We have some users with WD16 still, but we have been trying to move people over to the WD19 and WD19TB. It uses the Display Link technology and that seems to have gotten better over the last 3 or 4 years. PS - We have not used the VisionTek but those look to be universal so you could use them on other non-Dell brand laptops.įor us, the D6000 works when all the drivers line up and don't complain or conflict with other display drivers. The WD19 is expensive but it's very reliable, especially with multi-monitor support, switching primary monitors, plugging in USB devices and removing them. We don't have a lot of non-Dell equipment but for those, I buy universal USB Type-C docks off Amazon and/or use the extra ports right on the laptop itself. Which is why all these manufacturers have their own dock. Not sure if there is some proprietary parts inside the Thunderbolt dock but I suspect there might be. I tried it and the HP complained about charging and started to run hot. I would not recommend using the WD19 on say a HP laptop. Unlike the WD15, we could actually recover the WD19. The WD19, they seem to have worked out alot of the bugs and we have only had a few problems with them (usually firmware related). We had lots of trouble with the WD15, including bricking a handful after firmware updates (stay away from those). The 1st gen Dell laptops that didn't have the E-port used the USB-C type docking stations like the Thunderbolt WD15. For us, first thing to go is the ethernet port. We've had hundreds of these with very little problems. If these are older Dell laptops, they will use the E-port dock which is a special docking port on the bottom of the laptop (exclusive to Dell). We have decades of using Dell docks, back to the early days of D-port.
